LESSON 001
Understanding
Austrian Wine Labels
Start with origin, then read the variety, vintage and vineyard information in context.
What to look for
- DAC: a regulated origin and regional style.
- Variety: which grape is named on the label.
- Vintage: the harvest year declared.
- Ried: the term preceding a named single vineyard.
Read the lesson summary
An Austrian wine label connects a wine with its origin. DAC is used for regionally typical Qualitätswein that meets the relevant product specification. The grape variety and harvest year give additional information. A single-vineyard name is preceded by “Ried”; the recognised site is listed in the official vineyard register. A village name is used where relevant and permitted, rather than appearing on every label.
This is a written summary of the lesson.
